Wintering site tips
March 5, 2007:
Wintering sites are the areas used to feed livestock, generally cattle, during the winter months. These sites include a feeding area, a sheltered area and a water source. They are important to Alberta producers because they extend the province's limited grazing season. Here are some ways to minimize the environmental risk of wintering sites.
- Check the location of wintering sites in relation to the nearest surface water source and make sure that runoff does not flow into the source
- Manage the dispersion of animals through the movement of feed, bedding and shelter to minimize manure build-up
- Know and understand the legislation that pertains to livestock wintering sites. Manage your operation to meet and if possible exceed the legislation
