Manage manure storage facilities safely

If a manure storage facility is not maintained and operated properly, it may release manure or seepage, increasing environmental risk. Here are some things producers can do:

• Base the emptying of manure storage facilities on agronomic decisions, not storage capacity
• Check storage facilities regularly for leaks and damage
• Make sure the storage area is secure and warning signs are posted
• If in doubt regarding safe operation and maintenance of a manure storage facility, contact a qualified professional.
