Manage manure storage facilities safely
February 26, 2007:
If a manure storage facility is not maintained and operated properly, it may release manure or seepage, increasing environmental risk. Here are some things producers can do:
- Base the emptying of manure storage facilities on agronomic decisions, not storage capacity
- Check storage facilities regularly for leaks and damage
- Make sure the storage area is secure and warning signs are posted
- If in doubt regarding safe operation and maintenance of a manure storage facility, contact a qualified professional.
