Rural household wastewater systems, such as septic tanks, are affected by both the quantity and quality of the sewage that goes into them. Kitchen sink food-disposal units, often called gaborators, overload septic system with organic wastes and use large quantities of water to make them work properly.
Composting kitchen wastes conserves water, keeps improperly treated organic wastes from entering surface and groundwater resources and creates a useful by-product.
