Non-sparking motors can prevent fuel dispensing accidents

June 1, 2006

Grounding motorized pumps to prevent static electricity when dispensing fuel is a vital fuel management practice. "It's not the liquid you're scared of, it's the vapour," says Katrina Sexton, project engineer with the AgTech Centre in Lethbridge, the technical support team for the Environmental Farm Plan program.

"Preferably, one should use a non-sparked motor so none of the vapour can be sparked and cause an explosion. It's not the liquid you're scared of, it's the vapour."
